Educators and labor organizers must stand up against genocide!
OEA’s Executive Board passed a resolution on October 18, 2023, denouncing the assault on Gaza and the violent apartheid policies of the State of Israel against the Palestinian people. The resolution called on the union to support teachers in developing materials to teach our students about the struggle of Palestinian struggle for liberation. On November 4, the Representative Council (“Rep Council”) of OEA passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. After these resolution passed, a group of rank-and-file organizers (of which we are a part), made up of educators of all grade levels, and including many Jewish educators, formed Oakland Educators for Palestine. We created a list of suggested educational resources on Palestine to supplement the official OUSD materials, which biased against Palestinian voices. We also organized a “From Oakland to Gaza” teach-in on December 6, 2023.
